Haptic Vision

Writer’s Soundtracks is an experiment at the boundary between fiction and music. This is a new series and collaboration between Chaka Benson and the writing team at Frankford Publishing. This project explores the possibilities when these two abstract approaches recombine. Think of this as a music soundtrack with the fiction to go along with it. In this case the music, song titles and cover art were produced before the fiction was written. In most cases, a music soundtrack is made after the film is produced.

Frankford Publishing and the fiction they produce has such vivid impact I knew I had to work with them. Thinking about it later, it hit me…what would happen if I took a different approach? In this case, I produced the music and song titles, and let the writers produce the fiction as “set to the music”. You can enjoy the music while reading the pieces, or separately, and assemble all of the imagery in your mind. It’s up to you.

Once the vision was set, I put on my hat as graphic designer, and used tools like TouchDesigner and the Gimp to produce the cover and graphics. TouchDesigner is great for designing all encompassing spaces, and then render image or video output. In this case, a group of particles moving in a 3D space, being influenced by a custom physics. As a team, we loved the way it turned out as a cohesive product, and hope you do too.
